These plants are excellent for bringing in the new year as they generally come into bloom in early January. As a result they create an attractive evergreen backdrop to spring bulbs and flowers with their attractive flowers and their deeply-lobed, leathery leaves. While they are an extremely hardy plant they prefer a sheltered position away from the effects of strong icy winds in winter and spring that can damage the emerging blooms and leaves
